DelARF is proud to shine our member spotlight for the month of July on C.E.R.T.S., Inc. – Collaborative Effort to Reinforce Transition Success.

C.E.R.T.S., Inc. was founded and is still guided by a group of parents, professionals, educators, legislators, community members and agency representatives. Recognizing the lack of services available for adults with severe, multiple disabilities, these entrepreneurial thinkers took the initiative to start an Adult Action Center with the goal of facilitating a smooth transition from school programs to adulthood.

certs1Now with locations in Newark and Smyrna, C.E.R.T.S., Inc. Adult Action Center provides enriching involvement for each of its 36 participants. Unable to verbally communicate, attendees experience meaningful engagement through personally focused activities and outings.

C.E.R.T.S., Inc. Adult Action Center is a MOVE for Adults model site. MOVE (Mobility Opportunities Via Experience) helps participants acquire increased independence in sitting, standing and walking to enhance better health and personal dignity. MOVE produces results through hard work, repetition and the dedication of their trained staff. To give a wheelchair user the opportunity to walk is an incredible experience for everyone involved.

C.E.R.T.S., Inc. maintains a safe, nurturing, exciting environment through a low 3:1 staff to participant ratio. A full time nurse as well as part time occupational, physical and speech therapists are available to all individuals at both the Newark and Smyrna locations. After completing designated time in MOVE pacers, daily activities include cooking; art undertakings that consist of painting and pottery; music either provided live through local organizations, by a contracted musician or with instruments used by the participant’s; storytelling; gardening; community outings and targeted endeavors reflecting the season or a specific holiday.

C.E.R.T.S. mission is to enrich the lives of adults with multiple severe, disabilities and, in turn, their families through an active personalized day program. Visit the C.E.R.T.S. website to learn more or call (302) 731-0301 and arrange a tour of either their Newark or Smyrna locations.
